We did a review of Righteously Raw Chocolates a while back, and decided that we should do another review of this great little company. Our first time around, we reviewed their line of bite size raw chocolates – that ended up being terrific – while this review is mainly going to cover their line of raw chocolate bars. Their line of raw chocolate bars comes in an amazing sounding 5 flavors – Acai, Caramel, Goji, Chocolate, and Maqui – all of which we’ll be reviewing today. In addition to their raw chocolate bars, we’ll also be looking at their coconut macaroons, rawcholatl drinks, and their breakfast cereal. One of the things that initially drew us to Righteously Raw was the fact that they use “only naturally occurring sweeteners and fruits that don’t pass 35 on the glycemic index”, allowing you to taste the actual chocolate bar it-self. If you couldn’t infer from our enthusiasm in the sentences above, we highly recommend you check out the Righteously Raw web-site and learn some more information about who this company is and what they make. Also, don’t forget to check out Food Review 101 on Facebook either.
First, we tried out their line of chocolate bars, and started off with the Acai 80% Cacao Bar, and just believe us when we tell you that you’ve never had quite the chocolate experience that this bar will give you. The chocolate flavor isn’t as sweet as the major chocolate bars on the market today are, simply because Righteously Raw doesn’t throw in a bunch of additional flavors and sweeteners that will end up taking away the natural flavor of the chocolate. As you can see in the picture below, the bar has a layer of chocolate on the bottom, a layer of acai filling in the center, and a layer of chocolate on-top, giving this a really great combination of sweetness from the acai and boldness of the dark chocolate. Next up, we tried out the Caramel 90% Cacao Bar, and this chocolate bar had a really great combination of dark chocolate and sweet caramel. This bar is a bit more sophisticated than the Caramello bar you buy from the gas station, but it has such a great combination of chocolate and caramel that we highly recommend you check it out. After that, we headed for the Chocolate Maca Bar, and this was one of the more interesting flavors that Righteously Raw offers, which may sound strange given it’s simple name. The flavor of this bar is obviously going to be chocolaty, but it has a different kind of chocolate flavor to it that we haven’t really experienced before. The center of this bar contains chopped up raisins, which gives it a really nice sweetness to it that ends up balancing out all of the flavors in this chocolate bar. One of the more interesting flavors was next on our list, as the Maqui Rose Bar would suggest, but the flavor of this bar could actually be compared to eating a chocolate bar with cranberries in it. The look of the bar is one of the most astonishing things about this flavor, and actually gets its color from the red beet, red raspberry, red rose hip, and pink rose powder that Righteously Raw decided to use when making this extravagant chocolate bar. The last chocolate bar we tried out was the Goji 90% Cacao Bar, and what we enjoyed most about this bar was that the center is loaded with goji berries, raisins, and figs. The natural sweetness of the center layer really balances out the bitterness from the extremely high level of cacao that they use to make their chocolate bars. After we tried out their awesome line of chocolate bars, we sampled their Coconut Macaroons, which are “coated with a healthy dose of our award winning raw cacao and packed with raw sun-dried coconut”. As the picture indicates, these little macaroons pack a punch when it comes to flavor, because the raw cacao and sun-dried coconut flakes really give you a great combination of flavors. The soft coconut center pairs perfectly with the silky and crunchy chocolate coating that completely covers this entire macaroon, giving this macaroon a really great combination of taste and texture that is really hard to say no to. The Rawcholatl powder that we threw into some hot water – as you would with any hot chocolate drink – really gave us a luxurious cup of cocoa that we hadn’t tried before. The powder has a combination of cacao powder, vanilla, cinnamon, and allspice among a few other ingredients, which all seem to do their own part and contribute to the overall taste of this chocolate drink. Lastly, we tried out their Superfood Oat-Based Cereal, and as you can see in the picture, it’s simply a handy little way to get your morning nutrients. The package comes with a spoon in it, which means that all you have to do is mix it with a little bit of hot water and you’re good to go. The mix was loaded with oats, goji berries, cacao nibs, as well as that quintessential morning flavor of maple syrup, giving this oatmeal a really great flavor. Overall (4.5 out of 5).
The pros are that the flavors of the chocolate bars are incredible and inventive, the macaroon is great, the superfood cereal is really healthy and easy to prepare, the chocolate is: organic, gluten-free kosher, vegan low-glycemic, soy & dairy free, antioxidant rich, and nut & allergy free, and they’ll ship straight to your door.
The cons are that the chocolate bars might not be sweet for some people, and you have to wait 3 days for it to be shipped to your door.
